What is Plantar Fasciitis?

!±8± What is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar Fasciitis is one of the most common injuries that runners get and if not treated correctly it can mean an end to active running. There are an awful lot of myths out there about Plantar Fasciitis. The condition is not caused by trauma or by the wrong shoes or by a heel spur.

It is a mechanical condition. There a numerous variations but the main one is a sharp pain in the inside/front portion of the heel bone that can extend into the midfoot.

The tissue that connects the heel bone and the joint of the big toe is your Plantar Fascia and is made from similar tissue to tendons and ligaments. It is the foundation of your arch. The Plantar Fascia has a limited flexibility which is needed as part of the 'shock absorbing' part of the arch as the foot pronates. Pronation is a combination of internal rotation of the shin, rolling of the heel and other foot movements.

When a person is an over-pronator the Plantar Fascia is over stretched. Remember this happens every time you take a step, so in a runner the problem is increased due to the increased mileage and force applied to the Plantar Fascia.

Plantar Fasciitis doesn't occur out of the blue, it builds up over years. The pain that people with Plantar Fasciitis experience occurs when the stretching of the Plantar Fascia has caused an inflammation of the attachment of the Plantar Fascia to the heel bone. The reason that Plantar Fasciitis is at its most painful, usually in the morning or after long periods of sitting down, is because the Plantar Fascia has had a chance to tighten again.

This is why any effective treatment needs to address the biomechanical deficiencies of your walking and running if conservative treatment is to be successful. Stretching, massage and taping may also be needed but it all depends on the individual case. Also, although bad footwear doesn't cause Plantar Fasciitis, good correctly fitting shoes do ease Plantar Fasciitis so a running shoe assessment is advised.

Nike Free 5.0 Running Shoes - Review

!±8± Nike Free 5.0 Running Shoes - Review

What is Nike Free?

Nike has introduced the Free concept in 2005 as a way of combining the principles and advantages of barefoot running to strengthen the feet and legs with the protection and traction of a training shoe - in a lightweight package.

With increasing frequency coaches and podiatrists are suggesting runners to include barefoot runs to their running schedule. The logic behind it is that the use of cushioned and supported modern running shoes, our feet are becoming lazy. We don't use our foot's muscles very efficiently because the shoes do it for us. They correct our errors and even when we do put our foot the wrong way or with too much intensity - they take the shot on our behalf.

Experts say that while running barefoot you are forced to naturally improve your running gait and and the same time strengthen foot and legs muscles.

Not everyone has the luxury of a bare foot training environment like a pristine beach or a soft, grass field to experience the benefits of training barefoot. Running on concrete is not what our legs and foot were designed for, thus we do need the protection offered by a shoe (we can't see how landing with your body weight on a rock can improve your running at all).

How does it work?

There are deep, gender specific carves (sipes) molded along the length and width of the mid-sole, and these are what creates the barefoot feeling: you don't have a piece of foam to flex anymore, but almost independent "blocks" that adapt to your foot while it moves during the running gait.

The flexibility index of a Nike Free (3.0, 5.0 etc.) does not only refer to the sole unit, but also to the upper which has to have the same ration between support and freedom as the mid-sole.

You can read the rest of our Nike Free 5.0 Review on our website, where you will also find a video from Nike explaining the engineering behind the shoe.

Features and Benefits of the Nike Zoom Vomero+ 5

!±8± Features and Benefits of the Nike Zoom Vomero+ 5

The Nike Vomero is considered by many runners to be the best cushioned neutral running shoe. Here are some features and benefits of its latest version, the Zoom Vomero+ 5.

Nike+ Ready - A pocket located under the sockliner, inside the midsole of the left shoe, provides a secure place for the sensor (sold separately), which feeds speed and distance information to your Ipod or Nike Sportband.

The Nike Zoom Vomero+ 5 delivers the premium comfort and plush, responsive cushioning consistent with its predecessor, but has been refined to offer an enhanced fit and a smoother ride, all in a light weight package. This shoe is ideal if you're a runner with an under pronated foot to neutral gait.

Key Product Features

1. No sew overlays through the forefoot provide a snug, secure, and seam free fit for enhanced support and reduced areas of irritation.

2. Isolated and articulated, gender specific crash pad protects against shock at impact and helps to provide a smooth transition from heel strike through midstance.

3. New, zonal CPU midfoot saddle design works with an elastic mesh panel to provide a more adaptable fit, dynamic lockdown and support through foot strike.

4. Extended Duralon blown rubber enhances cushioning and encourages a smooth, efficient stride through propulsion.

5. Fully exposed, external heel counter helps lock the heel in place for a secure fit.

6. Segments of solid rubber in Waffle Fill and Waffle outsole under the medial rearfoot and toe tip for enhanced durability and great multi-surface traction.

7. Dynamic cuboid support component features a soft density foam for cushioning, support and a naturally smooth, efficient stride.

How Many Pair of Cross Country Shoes Do I Need?

!±8± How Many Pair of Cross Country Shoes Do I Need?

So How Many Pairs Do I Need?

The "How many pair do I need?" question is a common one I'm often asked when it comes to purchasing cross country shoes. This is particularly so with the more competitive crowd that logs over 50 -60 miles per week.

But for most runners, especially recreational ones, the answer is usually just one pair.

However, shoe fetishes come in all shapes and sizes and for the running crowd this is no different. It may be hard to purchase and train in just one.

And why not? There are so many good quality shoes available today and should your budget allow you to do so try experimenting with two or three different pair or brand names.

You might want a pair of Asics, Gel Nimbus N-10 or N-11. These will work. And for most runners you'll probably love them weather you're a runner or just wearing them for daily use.

You might want a pair Adidas- SuperNova. This is a great shoe with a great fan base and for around 40 bucks. It's hard not to try a pair of these. And if you're an Adidas fan to begin with, which I am, it's hard to dispute the point of how good these shoes are.

You might try a pair of Nike Zoom Vomero 4. An expensive shoe with great features for running on hard asphalt type surfaces with great comfort if, in fact, comfort exists when running on asphalt.

You might try a pair of Nike Air Pegasus. Few shoes have stood the test of time like this one. And it has a dedicated running following like none other.

You might try a pair of Brooks Ariel. Another expensive shoe with unique characteristics and design for those looking to cushion and absorb the "heel strike" better to reduce lower leg stresses.

The point is there are great shoes out there. Yes most are expensive. Everyone looks at "expensive" differently. To me anything over 0.00 is expensive.

But there is great quality less expensive shoes out there for far less than that 0.00 mark that will provide many runners with a most satisfying running and daily wear experience.

So back to the main question of how many pair do I need?

If you are a competitive runner I would recommend three. Chances are you're going to develop a shoe preference for running rocky uneven trails. Another for running primarily asphalt surfaces. Yet another for race day.

Cross country shoes are becoming that specialized.

But if you are a recreational running just trying to promote a healthier lifestyle and running a mile or 3 a day, 10-12 miles per week, I see no reason to have more than one pair. BUT, do your best to make sure you have that pair which best fits your foot type and running terrains.

In other words, shop around and locate the most knowledgeable running shoe sales personnel before buying.

And buy a quality shoe that affords you the comfort and durability for daily use. Nothing against Wal-Mart (and if those shoes provide you with quality and comfort then by all means buy them) but in the majority of cases you will want to purchase name brand cross country shoes.
